These notes should be read carefully by all who wish to attempt walks of more than an hour's duration in elevated country above 1200 metres. Mountain weather is both extremely unpredictable and highly localised in character. Snowfalls and blizzards are always possible and especially likely in the winter months. The following points are important:

bullet

Don't walk alone. Notify someone of your intentions, preferably park rangers. Leave an entry in the intentions box at the beginning of the walk. If your plans alter or the weather changes for the worse, record your progress and intentions in the guest log book of any hut you visit. Make sure that you carry a working pencil or pen.

bullet

Take a map and compass and be familiar with their use.

bullet

Check with local people about the likely weather before starting. Don't start if predictions are for bad weather.

bullet

Wear sturdy footwear ( Thongs, gumboots and fashion wear are unsuitable)

bullet

Take rainproof parkas with hoods and spare warm clothing.

bullet

Take spare food (e.g. chocolates, nuts, muesli bars, bananas)  together with your prepared lunch and something from which to drink.

bullet

Take matches, simple first aid equipment and a watch.

bullet

Don't start your walk too late and so take the chance of being trapped by falling light.

bullet

On your return Don't forget to contact the person you notified about your intended walk.
